Frank Wood was born in Toronto and attended King Edward Public School before entering UTS in 1910; he later became president of the school’s Y.M.C.A club and remained a dedicated member of the organisation throughout his life. After graduation he went on to study Applied Science at the University of Toronto and was again an involved student, serving as Year President and as a member of the Engineering Society executive. He enlisted in the Governor General’s Body Guard and eventually became a captain in the regiment before being appointed to the 177th Overseas Battalion, in which he accepted a lieutenancy so that he could go overseas more quickly. Wood arrived in England in April 1917 and transferred to the Royal Flying Corps., completing his pilot course successfully and becoming the only member of his class to be chosen for an advanced course in aerial gunnery. He was flying a fast single-seater over East Harling, Norfolk when his machine suddenly crashed, killing him. He is buried in the local cemetery.
